                                                                                       Volunteer Work Programs

General Indications
The children will not have to pay anything for the help that is given to them. Help will be offered in the villages surrounding Chupaca, as the statistics show for those that live in those villages poverty is extreme and overwhelming. Volunteers will work Mondays to Fridays, 4 -6 hours per day, and on Saturday mornings depending on the program. This makes Saturday afternoons and Sundays free for rest and/or visits to places in and around Huancayo (tours). Volunteers do not necessarily need to be professionals in the area that they are working. What is important to us, is that the volunteer shares and enjoys the experience which they undertake. The aim should be to encourage within people a feeling of being useful in their society, to help improve their low self-esteem brought about by violence and social poverty, and to help them to work on their own. It is up to the volunteer whether he/she wants to bring any materials, working tools or donations, that would assist their work with the children and adolescents.

                                                Activities for Volunteers

Education

The children and adolescents have often not gone to school and their academic level is very low. For this reason, it is important to teach them with love and understanding. The classes should be prepared by the volunteer according to the children´s knowledge level. The children need to learn about moral and ethical values such as respect, tolerance and honesty towards each other. The majority of the children have never had a proper childhood, and they need to learn to be children again, so that they can start to live in society. This can be done with activities in which they are encouraged to express and share their emotions.

Most of the children have hardly experienced any love in their lives, they have grown up in an environment essentially marked by hostility and violence. This is why the emotional aspect constitutes an important pillar for the creation of stable relationships between the children and the adolescents. The volunteers will act as role models in this aspect, and with their affection and care they will contribute to the development of the childrens´ self-esteem

Teaching English: The objective of this is to introduce the language, and to improve the childrens´ future prospects of employment..

Parents of the children: We teach basic health, infantile nutrition, personal hygiene, first aid and also family planning. We run programs to educate the parents about the need for love within the family unit, and the importance of moral values and mutual respect. Other topics may include domestic violence, alcohol abuse, and mistreatment of children.

Music: We have purchased some musical instruments with the intention of teaching the children some basic music skills. We own recorders, guitars and Peruvian flutes and require volunteers with knowledge of music to continue this program. Ultimately it is our aim to provide a concert for the people of Chupaca.

Technical Assistance: In this area we have developed different technical projects in conjunction with the volunteers, workers of Peru Luz de Esperanza and with the representatives of the farmers.Examples of this assistance are: electrical engineering, protection of the environment and biodiversity, building irrigation channels, architecture, civil engineering, agronomy, and forest and human development. All projects have the objective of improving the farmers situation.

Carpentry: This work is carried out in a rented and equipped room. The volunteer, together with a person in charge will be involved in the work. All the work is done using natural resources from the region. At the end of the volunteer's working period an exhibition of the work is organised, and a goodbye ceremony for the volunteer will be held in gratitude for the work done. The volunteer has the option to bring materials from their own country to facilitate the work and new ideas will be welcomed. All the work will also be accompanied by some games and other activities as required by the volunteers. An example of one of our objectives is to build tables and chairs for poor familiies who would normally sit on the ground or on bricks.

General Medicine:
This work will be carried out in the villages in open air. The work will be done by the volunteer and a person from PASPLE, who offers support. Due to increase in adolescent mothers in the villages health courses will be conducted covering: sexual orientation, sexuality and family planning. We will run First Aid workshops, hygiene and health workshops, healthy nutrition for children, and any others that the volunteer suggests and wishes to put into practice. The volunteer will get to know different villages and different life conditions, which will add to an unforgettable experience.

Computing:
The work will be put into practice thanks to the volunteer and a person from PASPLE. In general the program 'Office' is going to be taught. If the volunteer wishes, he can teach other programs as well. It's not necessary to be a professional in computing to be able to teach. The computer skills to be taught are at a basic level and there will also be diverse activities, such as games, going for walks, or anything else that the volunteer considers appropriate and convenient. We hope that the friendships between all will be strengthened and that this will ensure an unforgettable experience for the volunteer. We are going to provide 2 laptops that can be taken to the various villages and used for the computing class (if you like to offer your financial support to buy computers refer to the 'projects' link).
